Court Case 3rd appearance - Outcome.
Today
the committee of the Defenders of Gibraltar had a small scale symbolic
and peaceful presence outside the Gibraltar Law Courts, in relation to
the ongoing case against Francisco Gomez the Spanish Fisherman. We
emphasized our message in relation to the ongoing saga, which is
"Respect our Laws, Respect our waters"
Today, the defendants lawyer Patrick Canessa entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his client who made no appearance. The presiding judge then set aside the 20th and 21st of November for the trial of the accused. Patrick also informed the court that he will not be conducting the trial for the accused as he was professionally embarrassed.
It is important to note that Spanish media and Landaluce have tried this week to twist the circumstance of the case to make it appear that they have any influence or bearing on the legal process of our laws. It is extremely gratifying to see that the case will indeed be going to trial and pursued by the crown prosecution.
The Defenders of Gibraltar take this opportunity to remind Landaluce and the accused that no one is above the law, and that attempts to influence it to promote nefarious arguments on sovereignty are doomed to fail from the onset.
We also congratulate Patrick Canessa on his professional approach in dealing with an extremely difficult and sensitive case over the last few months. He has been a sterling example of a legal professional and we wish him the utmost best for the future.
See you in November!
