So many suffered during the queues the Weekend and Spanish Government still continue with Incursions in our Waters and stopping Goods entry to Gibraltar as well as people!

Spain Still continue to do their bullying against Gibraltar.

Today back to the Guardia Civil incursions in our British Gibraltar Territorial Waters!

GC being escorted off the premises this morning, NW Gib Bay photo courtesy M. Porral

No matter how much Press have covered the cruel and inhumane treatment to thousands of people caught in the queues - Spain still continues with the bullying.

Yesterday Tuesday the 30th July not only did the Spanish Guardia Civil start the queues to come into Gibraltar but then later to get into Spain!

Do the Spanish Government not realise that they are going to kill someone very soon by forcing innocent people in the thousands to sit in their cars in over 35 degrees?

Why is the United Nation for Human Rights?

Why is the European Union?

This treatment has to stop! No human being deserves to be treated in this manner! Basically there is very little difference between these Spanish actions and what terrorists have been doing all around the world!

No one from any country has the right to detain people in this manner and treat them without any care for what could happen to the babies, chiildren, the frail, elderly etc.

I guess they will only stop when someone actually dies from heat exhausation!

Below is just a bit of how the local lad's mother whose son was brutally beaten on Sunday has felt:

"My son was beaten up at the small holding station before he was taken to their central station. I was assured he was fine by the captain there. Of course I was not able to see him until he was released this afternoon. I have taken him to our own Police Station where a statement has been taken and a Forensic doctor has examined him and photographs taken. My son is , thankfully, a very strong young man but he has severe bruising on his chest, upper arms and very swollen and bleeding wrists. His knees and elbows are chaffed from being dragged across the floor. He was thrown on the floor of this small holding room face down where he was stamped on his handcuffed hands. There's more.......but is this not enough?"

So no matter how the Spanish Government can try to excuse this behaviour - there is no excuse!

What they are resorting to do is a tactic that their previous Dictor Leader Franco did to Gibraltar just before he decided to close it!

The Minister for Foreign Affairs from UK has tried to stop this bullying but it has as always reached DEAF EARS to his counterpart Mr Margallo! Spain is intent on making matters worse and be sure the next thing they will try to attack is our Bunkering business that is done in OUR waters!

Spain is in a financial crisis and in the middle of Government corruption cases - so what is hte best they can do to avoid riots to get them out of Government - target Gibraltar. In other wordsthey change the focus on what is really important to what is not!

************************************************************************
Then we have to fight for UK Government to stand up for the people of Gibraltar and they do not - they only appease.

How can this also happen? Well what do you expect if UK Government have ministers who have no loyalty to Gibraltar like Nick Clegg who is married to a Spanish woman! He is now putting his personal life before the many thousands of us suffering daily at the hands of SPAIN!

How can anyone in their right mind expect this Minister to be unbiased! This is so wrong!

Guardia Civil boards vessel in Gib waters

Author: GBC
Date: 31 July 2013

The Guardia Civil has today again taken executive action within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.  Civil Guard officers went on board a Spanish-registered yacht when it was sailing between the south and the Detatched Mole. They then took the vessel to La Linea.
As a norm, the Guardia Civil reports any suspicious activity to the Royal Gibraltar Police, but this did not happen on this occasion.  A spokesman for the RGP told GBC that in the main, both law enforcement agencies enjoy a good working relationship.  ******************************************************************************

THE TIMES SENDS STRONGLY WORDED MESSAGE TO MADRID
In an editorial entitled ‘Spain should respect Gibraltarians’ wish to be ruled from Britain’ The Times yesterday sent one of its firmest views expressed in recent decades calling on Spain to form their policies around the concept of consent.
The editorial stated:

“To be made to sit in a car for six hours in searing heat may not be the worst instance of arbitrary power but it is heavy-handed. It is what Spanish border guards have required, with rigorous searches of vehicles, in recent days at the crossing point into Gibraltar. Although the Spanish Foreign Ministry maintains that Spain has the right and obligation to exercise controls, there is little doubt about what sparked them. Gibraltar constructed an artificial reef last week to deter Spanish fishing.

The dispute between Britain and Spain over the sovereignty of Gibraltar is longstanding. It has no immediate prospect of being resolved because Britain has a democratic obligation to the Rock’s 30,000 inhabitants. They want Gibraltar to remain a British overseas territory. The British Government should uphold that wish and the Spanish Government should respect it.

Under the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the town and harbour of Gibraltar were ceded to Britain “to be held and enjoyed absolutely with all manner of right for ever”. No British government would insist on maintaining this provision just for a piece of rock covering two and a half square miles, however. The crucial principle is consent. Gibraltarians do not consent to a transfer of sovereignty.

Spain has every right to seek to persuade the people of Gibraltar of the advantages of such an arrangement. Nor should democratic governments in Madrid be tarnished by the record of the Franco dictatorship, which restricted movement across the frontier with Gibraltar from 1965 to 1968 and then closed it. The Government of Mariano Rajoy, however, is inviting the comparison by its behaviour. It should stop.

As partners in the EU and Nato, Britain and Spain are committed to democratic principles and have common ends. Spain needs to accept that democracy applies to Gibraltar too.”

The pirate of BGTW

By
The pirate of BGTW
CM stated that the Government could not interfere and that it was a matter for the police.

 The Editor,
31st July 2013.

I thought that we had heard it all, but far from it. We now have the skipper of the fishing boat ‘Divina Providencia’ using threatening language as to the removal of the concrete blocks—or else.

There are two options in dealing with this individual. Firstly his boat is in continuous violation of trespassing into BGTW and therefore must be arrested by the Police, reason the current CM stated that the Government could not interfere and that it was a matter for the police. Next instead of the huge flag being paraded, he should instead fly the Cross and Bones, after all they always call us pirates, who is the pirate now?

The outcome could then end up in an International Court of Law and this will give Spain the opportunity to tell the whole world that the 1713 Treaty is way above all other legislation, but also give our Legal representative the opportunity to request their adherence to the wording of Articles ii, vi and xi same treaty, not forgetting Treaty of Seville and Treaty of Versailles.
Yours faithfully,
W.L.Chamberland.

Below is our Press release by Gareth Gingell Chairman and Spokesman for Defenders of Gibraltar

PRESS RELEASE FROM DEFENDERS OF GIBRALTAR

FRONTIER SAGA

The Defenders of Gibraltar would like to thank all those people, groups, organizations and political parties who helped during one of the most tumultuous weekends Gibraltar has ever had to endure courtesy of the Spanish Governments medieval approach to Diplomacy.

The situation which unfolded this past weekend was simply a completely unnecessary and avoidable tragedy to witness; thousands of elderly, infirm and young children were needlessly subjected to being sat in 7 hour queues and 30*C temperatures.

It was because of being witness to this tragedy that we made requests through Social Media for volunteers to help distribute water and explain to individuals who was to blame for the situation of the queues; with thousands of tourists in the queue, we felt it was best to be able to speak to individuals and explain first hand who was to blame for this mess and what they could do to help (complain first hand to their local or EU political representatives). We had a very positive response from the individuals affected and the vast majority were very quick to make complaints there and then using their mobile phones or via the internet.

We must never forget that during humanitarian situations one must cast aside political stances or differences of nationality. In situations such as the one which occurred last weekend we Gibraltarians rose to the challenge and showed that ultimately we are human above all else and share a common goal in looking after each other. We showed that we are better than our neighbours Government, which commits itself to using such medieval tactics at the frontier to get their way. We must never lose the moral high ground and reduce ourselves to their level. We must continue to show that whilst they continue to treat us inhumanely, we treat their own with kindness. Do not underestimate the strength and gravity of this message.

One of the most harrowing incidents to occur at the frontier this weekend was the unnecessary brutality inflicted upon a local Gibraltarian who had done no wrong. Luckily, the incident was recorded by us and uploaded within the hour to social media platforms – news of the incident spread around the world in seconds and undoubtedly had an effect on the level of diplomatic pressure exerted on the Spanish Government. This is a testament to the speed with which Gibraltarians act to protect each other, and is a positive indicator of the strength of our community. Long may this continue!

We would like to also put forth an idea for both the Governments of Gibraltar and the UK to consider in ensuring a sufficient buffer to preventing Spain conducting such inhuman tactics at the border in the future:

“Formally request the European Union to provide for an individual from the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders ("FRONTEX") to be permanently stationed at the Gibraltar / Spain frontier at all times to monitor and report the level of traffic flow. This would ensure European accountability at all times for any deterioration in the flow of traffic and ensure that the full weight of European diplomatic pressure can be exerted on Spain should it continue to act in such inappropriate ways.”

We feel that the above idea has merit in ensuring that Spain is held to account at all times when it chooses to wield the free flow of traffic as a weapon against us. It would also serve to remind the EU of their responsibility to the well being of Gibraltarians and other fellow EU citizens wherever they may be in Europe; and that we Gibraltarians are also fellow EU citizens.

Unfortunately we believe that the Spanish Government will continue to wield the free flow of traffic at the frontier as a weapon in the near future, albeit predominantly from their side given the justified negative media attention they have received from their actions this weekend. It is of paramount importance that regardless of the excuses emanating from Madrid that we do not back down as a people. One should always stand up to the bully no matter what. If we do not stand up to the action taken by the bully and give in, the implications are too dire to even consider. A relationship must be built on mutual respect and understanding, which is clearly lacking from Spain when it wishes to impose its desire to have its way whilst holding a gun to our heads.

There are difficult times ahead thanks to the Spanish Government, which even before it was elected already expressed its desire to bring an end to tri-partite talks and ‘get serious’ with Gibraltar. If it was not the fishing dispute, it would be sovereignty of BGTW. If it was not sovereignty of BGTW, it would be the Isthmus. If it was not the Isthmus, it would be the airspace. If it was not the airspace, it would be the environment. If it was not the environment, it would be our economy. If it was not the economy, it would be our right to self-determination.

In summary the problem does not lie here in our homeland, but directly in the corridors of power in Madrid. Let us all stand fast as a people and be as unmoving as our mother rock.

Never give up,
Never give in.
Stand fast against the bully,
Or you will never win.

More about the Bully that the Spanish Government have proven to be - queues of over 6 - 7 hours created on purpose for 3 days 26/07/13 - 28/07/13

More on the suffering of the people caught in the cruel queues created by Guardia Civil on orders by their Government!

So Spain tried again to bring Gibraltar to our knees! Did it work? No of course not!

Spain always underestimate our strength and courage! They underestimate our UNITY in a crisis like this!

When other human beings are mistreated we the people of Gibraltar rise up like we have done for many centuries now! Hence the reason why we are still BRITISH and yet proud to be GIBRALTARIAN!

SO what has happened this last weekend - my comparison is equal not to just a bully but a spoilt bully at that! The spoilt bully throws a tantrum when it does not get its way so then goes on to cause harm not thinking of the consequences!

So what did we see? People suffering in the heat as they were FORCED to wai in a queue created deliberately and with the sole intention of causing HARM!

Spanish Government have given a very poor and weak excuse of smuggling as their reason! If it were not so serious one could laugh at this incorrect accusation!

The Spanish Government try to brainwash people to believe a myth of the amount of smuggling done by a small group of SPANISH people who are trying to earn some money passing some packets of tobacco all day! These persons are labelled as "Matuteras"

By no way am I agreeing with this act but as I say until you walk in the shoes of the persons - we are no one to judge! But if you are well educated and nowadays many more people are - use the internet and do the research and the mathematics like many of us have done already!

No matter if this group continued or not it would take them a year to be able to reach the real problem of tobacco smuggling that SPAIN does suffer but not because  of Gibraltar but rather at much bigger ports like ALGECIRAS, VALENCIA and yes even ANDORRA to name just a few. Here is the real and biggest problem of the so called tobacco smuggling - everyday thousands no millions of euros worth of smuggled tabacco in containers make its way into SPAIN with no issue! By no issue I am stating - no queues or delys in traffic - ships and people - all day - every day - all YEAR round! These are the ports that have certain MAFIA families controlling their entries and exits.

Don't believe me Google it! Do not be brainwashed! Be a searcher of TRUTH and JUSTICE! Be a part of the world to make a difference - stand up and be counted and do not remain blind and death and dumb to the truths around you!

So moving on to the injustices suffered by human beings! Animals I think were treated better than how people were treated this last weekend by the SPANISH Government and the weak follower of commands - The Guardia Civil should grow some B*lls and speak out and refuse to obey orders that are unjust and merciless!

I personally saw hundreds suffering in the heat across all ages each and every minute and second they were stuck in the queue! I am talking about the elderly, the frail, the sick, the children, the babies, the pregnant mothers and the disabled! Yes and even the very brave young and old men and women who did not fall into that category and yet suffered trying to calm their family, friends and children.

Below are some more pics taken by T Bickerstaff.

28th July 2013 Third Day of Spain Creating Queues at border and the bullying intensifies!

How can SPAIN be allowed to torture people - thousands - babies, eldeerly, disbaled by keeping them in the heat in queue?

So Day 3 - question how long will this continue? These cruel and merciless actions of creating queues in this way should never have been started and least of all tolerated by any government in SPAIN or UK!

We were down back at the Border handing water as from 10.00am. This looked to be another day of queues which were already at 2.5 hours.

Once again the aim was the humanity aspect and then explaining as best we could so that the people caught in the queues could understand.

It was a devastating 2 days of people experiencing such pain and suffering for no reason at al. I think most people always accept and expect at least 1-2 hours queue due to the influx of cars coming into Gibraltar. However, what is not acceptable is that queues get caused on purpose to inflict pain and anguish.

We had Visits from members of the opposition Danny Feetham and Edwin Reyes and some more volunteers whose names now at this time I forget. (Forgive me guys)

Today that I write about this is the day after the 3rd day of the saga that Spanish Government gave orders to the Guardia Civil at the Border to purposely and intentionally create queues. It has been hard to ensure that all persons no matter their nationality were assisted in every way possible and if they needed water this was given to them.

It was a very hard 3 days - challenging to say the least. Lots of people during the 3 days were attended by ambulance, taken to hospital and all the Government authorities were amazing! There was a great level of humanity in action where despite what was going on people from all of Gibraltar came out to offer help in any way they could or was needed.

Many thanks to the RGP, Fire Brigade, St John's Ambulance, the Customs and Immigration and many others! You were all so professional in this difficult time!

Everyone tried as much as possible not to turn the whole saga into a them and us or help only our own people. All help was offered to ALL people! Even the Working Group for Spanish Workers Working in Gibraltar came over in solidarity to help us dish out water and to explain to their own people caught in the queues that it is was their own Spanish government who were doing this and were to blame.

Our many photos and videos capture many stories and situations during the 3 days. Some are already on our youtube channel.

We still have to consolidate more to upload and publish. We will present them in a better way in the next week.

We have had a few crashes in the queues as people were too hot and disorientated after being in the sun for 4 hours. Each situation had to be dealt with a clam and serenity at times hard to accomplish when drivers and families are tired, angry and even disorientated to say the very least!

We have had a variety of people fainting, chest pain and panic attacks. All caused by the stressful situation in that people felt they were being detained in masses illegally. Fortunately with patience and understanding they all could by the time they reached the queue by the border see for themselves the culprits were indeed the Spanish Guardia Civil. It is wrong for human beings to be used in this way as a weapon by Spain to cause harm. The way they have behaved can be compared to an act of terrorism and at a time that Spain were supposed to  be in mourning for the lives lost in a recent train accident leaves a lot to be desired!

At the end of the day SPAIN has to accept that Gibraltar is British and belongs to the people of Gibraltar and whether they like it or not Gibraltar does have their own SEA and they can do it it what they like!

Let us not kid oursleves on the many excuses SPAIN will try to give for their recent behaviour - those who know Gibraltar and the people - those who have experienced it can all vouch - there is no reason to behave in this manner to any human being!

As if things were not hard enough yesterday on the 3rd day of all the problems with the queues - Spain commenced a new STRATEGY!

The new Strategy was to target all t hose person who now wanted to enter Gibraltar and not exit Gibraltar. This stared at 12.00 midday in which the Guardia Civil implemented the same "Create queue tactic - stop and search each and every car, motorbike and bicycles”. This tactic then caused 2.5 - 3.5 queues which went all t he way in SPAIN to Alcaidesa. So now we had thousands of more people to deal with. Who would suffer the heat in queues that again are being caused deliberately by the Spanish Guardia Civil.

By 2.00pm We had to move to the entrance of our Frontier to give out water to each and every car that was coming into Gibraltar - once again full of people with babies and children, Elderly, disabled etc All feeling the same pain and anguish as the many who suffered the queues to exit Gibraltar i the last 3 days!

Who would think this behaviour was from a country calling themselves to be a democracy and in the European Union. It felt more akin to a country whose border was not with an EU country. All the attitudes and how they were handling the public was so hostile. No manners, no explanations etc.

By this time the Volunteers from the Spanish Working group went back into Spain to start giving water to the people caught up in the queues there! A big thank you to them all.

Who would think anyting worse could happen? But yes tensions grew when before our very eyes we see what happened to a local lad coming into Gibraltar from Spain. This young man was waiting his turn in the queue and suddenly when he was told to move on was challenged by another Guardia Civil and POUNCED upon in a manner that not even Terrorist or other criminals are ever done!

This caused tensions to grow and even moreso when we could see the beating they were giving him so we began to record the incident. It was an utter disgrace that a human being on a bycycle could be treated in this cruel and vicious act of brutality!

Watch the whole saga on GBC website -

http://www.gbc.gi/news/2123/gibraltarian-aggressively-arrested-by-spanish-police
*************************************************************************

After this incident the tensions intensified and crowds started to gather at the border. Some came to show solidarity to what happened and others came to vent their anger and frustrations.

Some youngsters started to misbehave to show their frustrations and so the decision was made to put into good use this sense of frustrations. SO our Chairman took them walking to the Governors residence so that they all had an opportunity to show their solidarity.

So on they went and while they were holding the stand of solidarity about the unjust treatment from Spanish Authorities - our Governor Sir Adrian did come out to meet the people and talk to them, Well done Sir Adrian Johns!

Governor condemns queues, and reports back to FCO

Author: GBC
Date: 29 July 2013 at 11:08

The Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, has described the border queues as 'utterly unacceptable'.  Commenting on the weekend's gridlock chaos, Sir Adrian says freedom of movement is a basic human right, and it is absolutely wrong that people’s rights should be used as a political lever in this way.
The Governor has been in constant touch with the FCO at senior level and diplomatic activity involving ministers and ambassadors has continued over the weekend with the UK protesting Spain’s actions in the strongest terms. The events of Sunday afternoon on the Spanish side of the border have, in the Governor’s words, “gone beyond the pale” and represent a serious escalation of the situation. The Governor has called for calm while the UK acts at the highest level to urge Spain to restore the status quo.
Sir Adrian added that he also wanted to thank and congratulate the Royal Gibraltar Police and all those in support who are providing water, emergency aid, and assistance with the queues.  He said: “I saw at firsthand how the RGP were handling the most difficult situations with patience and good humour.  Many people came up to me and said what a wonderful job the police were doing.  I just want to add my appreciation as well.”

*****************************************************************************************************
Finally our Foreign Minister who  has constantly refused to take up the issues we in Gibraltar have been suffering - actually stood up to do his job! It was a disggrace that we the Defenders of Gibraltar have been asking for him to intervene and he left it too late! He has been fobbing us off to his Minister for Europe David Lildington who has done NOTHING to help us in any of our many issues and situations!

It took 3 days of suffering of many thousands before you did anything at all! Had you done hte phone call on the first day many innocent people would have been saved from the suffering that they had to go through!

It has been the lack of action of these two men that we blame them both for all recent escalations - the shooting at the Jet Ski and now not only the border queues but the beating up of one of our own local lads as if he were armed and dangerous!

Shame on you MR Hagueand shame on you Mr Lidington!

Hague calls Margallo to protest over frontier delays

Author: GBC

The Foreign Secretary William Hague has called the Spanish Foreign Office to protest over the weekend border queues. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has called on the people of Gibraltar to allow diplomatic channels to work, and remain calm.
A Foreign Office spokesman said the main concern at the moment was restoring people's basic right to freedom of movement. He said the UK wanted a speedy resolution to help ease the difficult situation, and enable a return to nomal operations.
In a tweet to followers, Mr Hague said: "spoke to Spanish Foreign Minister Margallo to raise our concerns about restrictions at Spanish-Gibraltar border".
And Fabian Picardo appealed for calm, asking Twitter followers to allow diplomatic channels to work. He also thanked RGP and HEO officers for their hard work at the weekend.

Emergency services and volunteers applauded

Gibraltar was united in thanking its emergency services and volunteers for their efforts in managing the queues and providing assistance to those trapped in their vehicles because of the Spanish border checks.
“The Government would like to thank all the agencies, authorities and volunteers who assisted the thousands of people who have been stuck in the border queues this weekend,” the Gibraltar Government said in a statement.

“This includes in particular the Royal Gibraltar Police, the Highways Enforcement Officers, the Ambulance Service and Gibraltar Health Authority.”

“The Government is also very grateful to the Defenders of Gibraltar and the many volunteers who made life more bearable for those people in the queue since the disgraceful delays orchestrated by the Spanish authorities intensified on Friday and everyone else from the community who joined in assisting.”

Guardia should challenge ‘inhumane orders’, says former RGP chief

Former Royal Police Commissioner Louis Wink this weekend called on Guardia Civil to refrain from carrying out inhumane border checks.
Commenting on his Twitter account in the course of this weekend’s dramatic queues in the blazing heat Mr Wink said “If GC (the Guardia Civil) were democratic they would challenge the orders they receive on grounds of [being] oppressive and against human rights. Where is their union?”

He stated that if the Guardia Civil are not happy they should challenge their orders. “Law enforcement officers cannot be forced to breach human rights,” he said adding that the searches of cars and bikes by the Guardia are “designed to increase the suffering of the innocent”.

He clarified that that he was not urging officers to disobey, simply to challenge the orders. But he also added that “we need to retain our composure and allow the pertinent authorities and UK diplomacy to deal with this.”
